Read more about them below.

Workshops at the Feb 4 Greenfield Winter Farmers Market:
There will be 4 workshops from 10:15 am to 12:15pm.
Workshop Rooms are located in the Church Basement and are not wheelchair accessible.
  • 10:15 am to 11:00 am:
    Seed Saving Basics

Workshop leader:Daniel Botkin, Laughing Dog Farm
Get inspired by a "seedy" madman who will show off his favorite "open-pollinated" heirloom tomato (and other!) seeds that have inspired a decade of great gardening at Laughing Dog Farm. Dan will review the significance of "heirloom genetics" as well basic seed botany and seed saving/preserving protocols, including which ones need only to be gathered, cleaned and dried, (the "easy" ones...) and which seeds need more elaborate "isolation" and/or hand-pollination schemes. Seeds for sale and free!

  • 10:15 am to 11:00 am:
Canning: It doesn't have to look perfect - it just needs to taste GOOD!

    Workshop leader: Mark Lattanzi
Get over your fear of canning - it's not that scary! We'll look at equipment, discuss techniques and recipes and best of all, taste the results. This workshop covers high-acid canning, which means recipes you can make in your home kitchen with simple equipment. Bring your notebook and your curiosity and leave ready to preserve the 2011 harvest!

  • 11:15 am to 12:15 am:
    Fun With Home Composting

Workshop leader: Annie Sullivan-Chin with Catherine Bryars
Compost enthusiasts Annie and Catherine will talk about the many benefits of composting and how to make it feasible in your home. Conversation topics include soil science fundamentals, how to get/build buckets and bins, troubleshooting a lazy compost pile, and a special show-and-tell about worm composting. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and experiences to share.

  • 11:15 am to 12:15 am:
Understanding Permaculture: Community Resilience for Greenfield and Beyond

Workshop leader: Jonathan Bates of Food Forest Farm
"How can we meet human needs while improving ecosystem health?"

Barter Fair 12:20 to 1:00 pm
The Barter Fair will be held in the Church Basement which is not wheelchair accessible.

Too much winter squash and not enough dried peaches in your life? Bring your surplus home-grown/home-made food stuffs to the Fifth Annual Greenfield Winter Fare Barter Fair and trade them for someone else’s home-grown goods. Last year’s Barter Fair was a big hit with participants trading everything from frozen pesto, healing salve and homemade vanilla extract to herbal tea, chestnuts, and of course, pickles.
How does it work? Anyone who has home-made items to barter will gather at 12:20 p.m. with their goods and take part in informal trading during the last hour of the Greenfield Winter Farmers Market. A great chance to meet your home-growing neighbors, practice the art of bartering, and bring home delicious food and goods without exchanging money. Open to gardeners, gleaners, foragers, canners, dryers... even professional farmers!
