Workshops at the Winter Farmers Market:
(There will be six workshops from 10:15 am to 1 pm.)

  • 10:15 am to 11:15 am: Canning: It doesn't have to look perfect - it just needs to taste GOOD!
    Workshop leader: Mark Lattanzi
    Get over your fear of canning - it's not that scary! We'll look at equipment, discuss techniques and recipes and best of all, taste the results. This workshop covers high-acid canning, which means recipes you can make in your home kitchen with simple equipment. Bring your notebook and your curiosity and leave ready to preserve the 2010 harvest!

  • 10:15 am to 10:45 am: Winter Riches: Tips and Ideas for Eating Locally Through the Snowy Months
    Workshop leaders: Meggin Thwing Eastman and Juanita Nelson
    Need tips, recipes, and inspiration for eating well all winter on locally grown foods? Join Meggin Thwing Eastman, who blogs about local eating at her web site Happy Valley Locavore , and Juanita Nelson, founder of Winter Fare and long-time farmer and local eater, to talk about ideas for delicious winter eating.

  • 11 am to 11:30 am: Backyard Sugaring
    Workshop leaders: Margaret Christie and Nicholas Jones
    Make your own sweet stuff AND get your family outside in muddy March. It’s not hard to do some small-scale sugaring in your own driveway or yard. We’ll talk about how to do it and what equipment you need.

  • 11:30 am to 12:00 pm: Growing and Eating Sprouts
    Workshop leader: Pat Leuchtman
    Learn about how to grow sprouts at home, and see seeds and canning jars full of sprouts in at least two stages. This workshop will also explore the culinary delights of cooking with and eating sprouts. Pat has been gardening for 40 years and writing about gardens and gardeners almost as long. Her weekly column, Between the Rows, has been carried in The Recorder since 1981. Visit Pat's home page at Commonweeder.

  • 11:45 am to 12:30 pm: Simple Milk Products - Cheese, Yogurt, Buttermilk
    Workshop leader: Margaret Christie
    It’s easier than you may think to make simple milk products. This workshop will teach the basics of yogurt, buttermilk, and soft chevre, and provide a resource list for cultures and more information. We’ll also talk about how to fit simple cheesemaking into your day-to-day life.

  • 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm: Winter Storage: Prolonging your local food season
    Workshop leader: Annie Sullivan-Chin
    Assistant manager of Stone Soup Farm , Annie is full of enthusiasm for preserving what she grows, and ready for adventure when it comes to winter storage! In this workshop she will share some of her food storage skills and adventures with you.

The Display Area includes information about locally grown food and local agriculture.
  • Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) strengthens local agriculture by building connections between farmers and the community.

  • Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) - CSA Farms brochures and pamphlets table is a display of farm share offerings in the area.

  • Franklin Conservation District

  • Laughing Dog Farm: Powerpoint presentation on permiculture designs, along with demos of heirloom seed saving. Danny will even be passing out samples!

  • Master Gardeners of Western Mass

  • New England Farmers Union: The New England Farmers Union is the youngest chapter of the National Farmers Union.The New England chapter's mission is to preserve New England's capacity to feed and fuel itself.

  • NOFA Mass: the Massachusetts chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association.

  • Northeast Organic Wheat: - consortium of local teams in Vermont, NY, Massachusetts and Maine to trial world heritage wheats. We invite farmers, gardeners and schools to work with us to restore the delicious heritage wheats grown in 1800s New England.

  • Picadilly Farm runs a Community Supported Agriculture program with vegetable shares for pickup in Greenfield, at the farm in Winchester, and other places. Share distribution options and prices exist for June through November, late June through Sept, and November through December. We also run a small livestock operation with eggs for sale at the farm.

  • Recipe Swap and Chat area - Bring some to share, take some to make!

  • Valley Community Land Trust (VCLT) is a non-profit organization that holds title to land, considering it neither as private nor public property, but as a sacred resource to be held in trust for present and future generations.


Barter Fair 1 to 2 p.m
Too much winter squash and not enough dried peaches in your life? Bring your surplus home-grown/home-made food stuffs to the Second Annual Winter Fare Barter Fair and trade them for someone else's home-grown goods. Last year's Barter Fair was a big hit with participants trading everything from frozen pesto, healing salve and homemade vanilla extract to herbal tea, chestnuts, and of course, pickles.
How does it work? Anyone who has home-made items to barter will gather at 1 p.m. with their goods and take part in informal trading during the last hour of the Winter Fare Farmers’ Market. A great chance to meet your home-growing neighbors, practice the art of bartering, and bring home delicious food and goods without exchanging money. Open to gardeners, gleaners, foragers, canners, dryers... even professional farmers!

Soup Cafe 11 am to 1 pm
Soup's On at the Winter Fare Market! Five area restaurants and food establishments will flex their culinary muscles and will be selling delicious, nourishing, hearty, soul-warming soups made with local ingredients at the Winter Fare Market. Participating restaurants will be: The soups will be for sale at the "Soup Café" at the Winter Fare Farmers Market. Soup will be served from 11 AM until about 1 PM (or as supplies last). Come see and taste how the pros do it. Treat yourself to a hot bowl of soup and support Winter Fare at the same time -- a portion of the price of the soup will defray the costs of putting on Winter Fare.
