Maximizing the Winter "Hoophouse" Garden
By Daniel Botkin of Laughing Dog Farm.
These days lots more folks are growing at least some of their own sustenance - in the warm months. But here's an obvious added-value if we can keep those productive, food gardens going all year round. One promising option is the unheated, steel (plastic covered) "hoophouse" as a long-term, relatively cheap, protected, plant-overwintering and grow zone for perennial and cold-hardy crops. While commercial farmers everywhere are now utilizing them, many home gardeners, hobbyists and backyard permaculturists haven't yet. In this beginning-level class we will evaluate basic hoophouse design(s) and building ideas as well as show and demonstrate alternative "hoophouse" management strategies for continuous harvest, even in chilly New England. Followed by hot soup and informal discussion. Donations appreciated ($15 - $25 suggested). Info at 413-863-8696.
